1. Introduction

Unscroll ("we," "us," or "our") is an Android app that helps users break free from late-night scrolling by scheduling app blocks during specific time windows. Your privacy is important to us. This policy explains exactly what data we handle, where it is stored, and how it is used. Unscroll is developed and operated by Anshul Sood.

2. Data Collection & Local Storage

No Personal Data Collected by Us: Unscroll does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information to our own servers — ever.

Local Data: Your app restriction schedules (which apps to block and during which hours) and your blocked session history are stored entirely on your device using Android's SharedPreferences. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to back it up using the optional Google Drive feature described below.

Blocked Session Logs: Each time Unscroll enforces an app block, it records the blocked app name, package identifier, and timestamp locally on your device. This data is used solely to generate your personal screen time statistics within the app and is never shared with us or any third party.

3. Optional Cloud Backup — Your Own Google Drive

        Important: When you use the cloud backup feature, your data is saved to your own personal Google Drive — not to our servers, not to any database we control. We never see, access, or store your backup data.
    

Unscroll offers an optional backup feature (available to premium users) that saves your screen time data to a private, hidden folder in your own Google Drive account. Here is exactly how it works:

What is stored: A single JSON file named unscroll_backup.json containing your blocked session history (app names, timestamps, and dates).
Where it is stored: In the AppData folder of your Google Drive — a hidden, app-specific folder that is invisible in your regular Drive view. It is accessible only by Unscroll and cannot be seen or modified by other apps or people.
Who controls it: You own this data entirely. It sits inside your Google account, governed by Google's terms. We have no ability to read it, modify it, or delete it — only you can.
Authentication: Sign-in is handled via Google's secure OAuth2 flow. Unscroll requests only the drive.appdata permission scope, which limits access strictly to the hidden AppData folder. We never request access to your full Google Drive, Gmail, contacts, or any other Google service.
Firebase Authentication: We use Firebase Authentication solely to manage your sign-in state (i.e., to keep you logged in across app sessions). No personal data or backup content is stored in Firebase or on any server we operate.

You may use Unscroll fully — including all restriction and blocking features — without ever signing in. Cloud backup is entirely optional.

Deleting your cloud backup: You can delete your Google Drive backup at any time by revoking Unscroll's access in your Google Account settings under Security → Third-party apps with account access. Revoking access permanently removes the backup file from your Drive's AppData folder.

4. Advertising & Crash Reporting

        Unscroll is ad-free. As of version 1.1.2, all advertising software has been removed from the app. Unscroll shows no advertisements to any user, and no longer collects or uses your Advertising ID.
    

No advertising: The app contains no advertising SDK, requests no advertising permissions, and shares no data with any advertising network.

Previous versions: Versions 1.1.1 and earlier included the Google AdMob advertising SDK, which showed ads to free-tier users and allowed Google to collect device identifiers (Advertising ID), approximate location derived from IP address, and ad interaction events. If you are still running an older version, updating to version 1.1.2 or later removes this entirely. Any data previously collected by Google is governed by Google's Privacy Policy; you can reset or delete your Advertising ID at any time via Settings → Google → Ads on your device.

Crash reporting: Unscroll uses Firebase Crashlytics to detect and diagnose app crashes so we can fix stability problems. When the app crashes, Crashlytics collects a diagnostic report containing the crash stack trace, device model, operating system version, and app version. These reports are technical in nature and are not used to identify you personally, are not used for advertising, and are not sold or shared with third parties. This data is processed by Google on our behalf under Firebase's privacy terms.

5. Permissions

Accessibility Service: Used to detect when a restricted app is opened and redirect you to a blocking screen. This service monitors window-state-change events only. It does not read screen content, keystrokes, passwords, messages, or any personal data.
Device Administrator: Used to prevent Unscroll from being uninstalled while app restrictions are active, so self-imposed or parental controls cannot be bypassed by removing the app.
Usage Access (Usage Stats): Used to detect the currently active foreground app when the Accessibility Service restarts (for example, after a device reboot), ensuring restrictions remain enforced without gaps.
Display Over Other Apps (Overlay): Used to show the blocking screen on top of a restricted app when enforcement is triggered.
Receive Boot Completed: Used to verify that the Accessibility Service and Device Admin are still active after every device restart, and to post a notification if either has been disabled by the device.

6. In-App Purchases

Unscroll offers an optional one-time lifetime purchase to unlock premium features (unlimited app restrictions and cloud backup). All financial transactions are processed securely by the Google Play Store billing system. Unscroll does not collect, process, or store your credit card or any financial information.

7. Data Retention & Deletion

All data stored locally on your device — including restriction schedules and blocked session logs — is deleted automatically when you uninstall the app.

If you used cloud backup, your data resides in your own Google Drive AppData folder and is subject to your Google account settings. Because we have no access to this data, we cannot delete it on your behalf. To remove it, revoke Unscroll's access in your Google Account settings as described in Section 3 above.

Crash reports sent to Firebase Crashlytics are retained by Google for a limited period in accordance with Firebase's data retention policy and are automatically deleted thereafter.

Since we do not operate any database or server storing your personal data, there is no account deletion process on our end. If you have questions about data held by Google (via Google Sign-In or Firebase), please refer to Google's data handling policies.

8. Children's Privacy

Unscroll is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has used this app and provided personal data, please contact us and we will provide guidance on removing that data from their Google account.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected by an updated "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
